Developing Strong Habits In Your Dancers

Highly successful people are shown to have developed strong habits and routines in the ways they conduct themselves in life.

Studies have shown that it takes more than two months for a new behavior to become automatic. The opinion varies widely on how long it takes for a person to develop a habit, and experts state the length of a habit to develop depends on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. Studies show it can take anywhere from 18 days to 254 days for people to form a habit.

Some of the habits a studio may be able to successfully help students develop are:

• More stretching / greater flexibility
• Working toward a technical goal
• A conditioning plan
• Time management & organization

Dance educators can also lead their students to develop strong habits in the following possible areas:

• Study goals / plans which can apply in their educational pursuits
• Work ethic
• Dealing with fellow classmates
• Healthier life styles

Young dance students can use their dance experiences as ways to develop strong habits which will become a great asset to them in their pursuit of great dance, educational or work opportunities.
